College Career
Joe Washington, affectionately known as “Jo Jo,” was a legendary figure at the University of Oklahoma. He arrived in Norman as a gifted running back and return specialist, immediately capturing the attention of college football. Washington was a cornerstone of the Sooners’ wishbone offense, renowned for his elusive running style and breakaway speed. He was a two-time consensus All-American in 1974 and 1975 and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1974.
Joe played for the Sooners from 1972 to 1975, and in that span, the team had a record of 43-2-1 and won two National Championships. Washington put up 3995 yards on the ground and 5781 all-purpose yards to power the Oklahoma offense. Joe earned All-American honors twice in college.
Road to the Pro Game
Following his stellar collegiate career, Washington was a top prospect in the 1976 NFL Draft. The San Diego Chargers selected him with the fourth overall pick.
After one season with the Chargers, the running back then played for the Colts for 3 years, the Redskins for 3 seasons, and a stint with the Atlanta Falcons in his final year of playing. Washington’s NFL career lasted for 9 seasons, and his 8252 total yards from scrimmage and 31 touchdowns made him a formidable back for defenses to deal with.
The National Football Foundation selected him to enter its College Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
