The Ultimate Competitor: Chris Spielman, Tackles, Triumphs, and College Hall of Fame

Darin Hayes

October 11, 1965 – We celebrate the birth of Charles Christopher “Chris” Spielman in Canton, Ohio, whose ferocious intensity defined a generation of linebackers. A true Ohio legend, Chris Spielman dominated at Ohio State from 1984 to 1987. He earned Consensus All-American honors in 1986 and was a Unanimous All-American in 1987, the year he won the prestigious Lombardi Award as the nation’s top lineman or linebacker. He still holds the Ohio State record for most solo tackles in a career (283) and famously recorded a school-record 29 total tackles in his final collegiate game against rival Michigan. For his collegiate achievements, Spielman was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009.

Spielman was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round (29th overall) of the 1988 NFL Draft. He became the undisputed leader of the Lions’ defense for eight seasons (1988–1995), leading the team to four playoff appearances. He is the Lions’ all-time leader in career tackles with 1,138 (since the statistic was officially tracked in 1973). Over his 10-year NFL career, which included stints with the Buffalo Bills (where he set a team record with 206 tackles in 1996) and the Cleveland Browns, Spielman was selected to the Pro Bowl four times and was named First-team All-Pro in 1991.

His legacy extends far beyond the field: Spielman missed the 1998 season to care for his wife, Stefanie, who was battling cancer, and later became a passionate national advocate and fundraiser for breast cancer research. After his playing career, he spent over two decades as a renowned college and NFL broadcaster for Fox Sports and ESPN, before returning to the Lions in 2021 as a Special Assistant to the Owner. Spielman was inducted into the Lions’ Pride of the Lions ring of honor in 2021.
